2020/21 Season Update

Jul. 20, 2020

The Metro Basketball Association held it's AGM on July 14th virtually via ZOOM. We would like to thank all of those members who attended, it was our best turn out in a number of years. Full minutes for the meeting will be poster here once completed. Here are a few highlights/changes for the upcoming season.

Dates of Play

Without a doubt COVID-19 will cause some type of issues for basketball and all winter sports. At this time the Metro Basketball Association is moving forward with the dates of play currently posted on our website, this would be a start date of the last weekend in October as in years past. The league executive will meet on August 15, 2020 to make a decision on a start date for this season. If the start date is delayed, the new start date will be the weekend of January 9 & 10, 2021.

Rule Changes

The Metro Basketball Association has made two rule changes for the upcoming season:

  1. Motion: That Rule 19 of the MBA Rules of play be amended to read, Player recruiting is not permitted. Associations and/or coaches may not contact individual players or groups of players about playing for their association/team within the Metro Basketball Association. Associations with an evidence based knowledge that recruiting has taken place may, through their club president, submit in writing to the league their concerns along with all factual evidence. If the league deems the concern to be legitimate the board of directors will follow up with the club in question.

  2. Motion: That Section 20 be added to the MBA Rules of Play and include, in principal, The Trans-Inclusion Policy once passed by Basketball Nova Scotia’s Board of Directors. (This document is in final review by the Basketball Nova Scotia Board of Directors.)

League Fee Increase

This coming season the league will see a substantial fee increase because a very large facility rental fee increase and a smaller increase in officials rates. The league registration fee will be $1695.00 per team for the upcoming season. This is assuming the league begins games on time at the end of October. Should the league start at the later January date, it is very likely the season will run shorter. If this is the case the league fee will be adjusted to reflect the number of games played.
